"Helping children and families understand big feelings with empathy, connection, and calm guidance."
Emotion coaching helps children feel understood, supported, and emotionally safe while learning how to manage big feelings. It offers parents and carers a practical, connected way of responding to emotions without dismissing, escalating, or shutting them down. Emotion Coaching isn't limited to children - emotion coaching can benefit everyone and you'll find emotion coaching for adults on this site as well - Emotion Coaching for Adults click here.
Emotion Coaching is a way of responding to children’s feelings that helps them build emotional awareness, self-regulation, resilience, and trust. Rather than rushing to stop the feeling, fix the problem, or correct the behaviour straight away, Emotion Coaching begins with connection.
It teaches children how to recognise and name what they are feeling, understand what is happening inside them, and gradually learn healthier ways to cope.
This approach can be especially helpful for children who experience anger, frustration, anxiety, meltdowns, emotional sensitivity, or difficulty calming down after becoming upset.
Children are still developing the parts of the brain that help with emotional regulation, impulse control, and problem solving. When emotions become overwhelming, they may cry, yell, shut down, lash out, or become highly distressed.
These moments are often not about “bad behaviour” alone — they are signs that a child may be struggling to manage something internally. Underneath the behaviour there is usually a feeling that needs support, understanding, and guidance.
Emotion Coaching helps adults respond in ways that reduce shame and strengthen emotional safety, while still holding healthy boundaries and limits.
Emotion Coaching can be useful for parents, carers, and families wanting support around children’s emotional development, behaviour, and connection.
Some of the areas this may support include:
• meltdowns and emotional outbursts
• anger, frustration, and reactivity
• anxiety and emotional overwhelm
• sibling conflict and family stress
• emotional sensitivity and shutdowns
• helping children name and understand feelings
• building co-regulation and calm connection
• setting boundaries with warmth and confidence
Emotion Coaching is often about changing the way we respond in the moment. Small shifts in language can make a big difference to how safe and understood a child feels.
Instead of saying:
“You’re fine, stop crying.”
You might say:
“You’re really upset right now. I’m here with you.”
Instead of saying:
“Calm down.”
You might say:
“Your feelings are really big right now. Let’s work through it together.”
This does not mean allowing harmful behaviour. It means helping children feel understood first, so they are more able to learn what comes next.
Emotion Coaching is not about permissiveness — it is about combining empathy with guidance, limits, and emotional support.
Many parents deeply want to respond calmly and helpfully, but it can be hard when emotions are intense, repetitive, or exhausting. Counselling can help you understand what is happening beneath your child’s behaviour and support you in developing more confidence, calm, and practical tools.
Emotion Coaching can be woven into everyday family life — after school, at bedtime, during sibling conflict, or in those moments when your child seems to “fall apart”. Over time, these repeated moments of connection help build stronger emotional foundations.
Support can also be helpful if you are noticing patterns of stress, emotional overwhelm, parenting fatigue, or feeling unsure how to respond to your child’s needs.
